Why start a reading group about this book?
“Abundance” has become a buzzword in contemporary American political discourse on both the Left and the Right. The term and the book have come to symbolize something about the way our institutions function, detailing the symptoms of their evolution and decay, and tracing the political movements that influence the policies they generate.
But what does the Abundance agenda actually symbolize, and how should we interpret the symptoms Klein and Thompson give their attention to? On the Right, it is a diagnosis without solutions other than free market solutions. On the Left, it is a self-diagnosis with maybe the wrong specific solutions? But exactly what issues does the text focus on and what interventions does it prescribe? What data and references does the book’s argument or themes rely on?
To understand how this book and its themes divide the left, and have become a central point of discussion in current US politics, we will read this book out loud together, sentence by sentence, page by page, section by section. We will produce a mapping of the text, and gamify the collective reading experience.
*
What kind of schedule will the meeting have?
After the icebreaker conversation during the first 10 minutes from 6:30pm-6:40pm, we will take roll at 6:41 and then begin reading at 6:45. We will read from 6:45 to 7:10.
Then we’ll take a 15 minute break, to get some air, go to the restroom, and have some water, coffee, or try the fresh fruit and vegetable and breads selection. We will begin reading again at 7:25.
At 8:05 we will take a 10 minute break.
At 8:15 we will reconvene to tally the worksheets and enter the hermeneutic information collected. The texty spreadsheets will be published on the project web page for reference and documentation, in addition to any individual participant’s handwritten copies and records.
*
Why participate in KC What reading groups?
You do not have to read the book before the meeting. We will read it together, out loud, with different readers for each page.
If you have already read the book, you can share and fortify your grasp of the subject by participating to create a unique text mapping of the book and its themes and references.
The group presents a structure for analyzing a text, but also approaches books as more than content, just information. By reading aloud together you get a sense of the rhythm of a text and hear how other people emphasize certain words and phrases.
It will take a long time to go through a book in this way. As we progress through it, we will create a texty spreadsheet by voting on the most significant sentence on each page, and submitting one sentence succinct summaries for individual pages.
As a reader in a slow, collective reading group, you will deepen the reading experience by reading around the main text, exploring the other books and references cited, and producing writing based on your knowledge that can be included in the reading group’s monthly publication.

By purchasing this ticket, you are consenting to be part of video recording and other documentation of this text mapping project. The worksheets you fill out are 100% yours, you can choose to share or save or edit or disregard them, but just know that you might be on video at the meeting and that you will contribute to compiling the texty spreadsheet.
